BIRTH TRAUMA

Postnatal support with EMDR offers a gentle, effective way to process the wide range of emotions that can arise after birth—not just trauma. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, or carrying unexpected emotions from your birth experience, EMDR can help you make sense of it all and find relief. Birth is a powerful, transformative event, and the early postpartum period can bring up feelings of fear, guilt, or sadness alongside joy. EMDR supports you in releasing what’s heavy, strengthening your emotional resilience, and reconnecting with yourself and your baby. This work can help you step into parenthood with greater clarity, peace, and self-compassion.

  • A postpartum EMDR session offers a supportive, grounding space to gently process the emotional weight that can follow birth—whether from a traumatic experience or simply the overwhelm of new parenthood. In our session, we’ll begin by identifying the thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations connected to your experience, whether it’s anxiety, guilt, fear, or a sense of disconnection. Using EMDR we’ll work with bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess these overwhelming or unintegrated memories. This technique supports your nervous system in releasing stuck emotional responses, reducing the intensity of distress, and allowing space for peace, clarity, and deeper connection to yourself and your baby. Sessions are paced with care and always tailored to meet you exactly where you are in your postpartum journey.

  • Yes! This is my preference in fact. I believe in taking a holistic approach, so I like to work with everyone involved in the birth experience, when it serves the family. Whether it’s the birthing individual, their partner, or other family members, addressing the trauma, anxieties, fears etc. together can foster better understanding, communication, and healing within the family unit. This way, we can support each other through the healing process and create a more cohesive, supportive environment for everyone involved.

  • The number of sessions it will take to process your postpartum experience can vary depending on your unique experience and needs. However, I typically like to work in a similar format to my EMDR intensives, which involve 5, 90-minute sessions. This allows us to dive deep into the complex emotions and create meaningful progress in a focused and supportive way. Of course, we can always reassess as we go, and I will tailor the approach to what feels right for you.
